DLN local roundup: Devine notches 200th career point for Bishop Shanahan; Kennett rolls to win (2024)

The Bishop Shanahan High School boys’ lacrosse team defeated Oxford, 18-3, Tuesday, as the Eagles’ Joe Devine (three goals, four ground balls) scored his 200th career point. Other Shanahan standouts included Colin Gaffney (four goals, four ground balls), Nate Kennedy (two goals, one assist), Nick Snyder (two goals, two ground balls) and Tom Fischer (won seven of eight faceoffs).

Kennett 16, Sun Valley 2 >> The Blue Demons, who had 10 players reach the scoring column, were led by Bo Freebery (five goals, four assist), Colin Kelly (three goals, won 18 of 22 faceoffs) and Jackie Good (one goal, three assists).

Conestoga 8, Upper Darby 1 >> The Pioneers were led by Clif Hawkins (two goals, two assists), Liam Donovan (one goal, one assist) and Holt McGinn (one goal, won nine of 11 faceoffs).

Girls’ Lacrosse

Bishop Shanahan 16, Oxford 4 >> Ava Mullen and Elise Pezone each scored hat tricks for the Eagles. Other Shanahan standouts included Stella D’Ambro (two goals, one assist, two caused turnovers, two draw controls, two ground balls), Riley Murray (two goals), Emma McGlothlin (one goal, one assist, four draw controls) and Carly Cunningham (three caused turnovers, two ground balls, two draw controls).

Downingtown East 18, West Chester Rustin 7 >> Lexie Conte and Cameron Yard each had hat tricks for the Cougars. Other Downingtown East standouts included Riley Marks (two goals, five draw controls), Sofia Fanelli (two goals, three assists), Karyn Michaels (two goals, two assists, three draw controls), Jayne Michaels (three assists, one goal, four ground balls) and Collyn Kropp (two goals, two draw controls, three caused turnovers). Jordyn Krafchick scored four goals for Rustin and won three draw controls.

Kennett 19, Sun Valley 5 >> The Blue Demons were led by Jaylee Killgore (three goals, three assists), Marissa Herring (four goals), Mary Carroll (three goals, four assists), Maeve Wells (two goals, two assists), Noelle Foester (two goals), Quinn Simmons (one goal, two assists, nine draw controls) and Marta Tresoldi (nine saves).

Boys’ Tennis

Unionville 7, West Chester Henderson 0 >> The Longhorns won all seven matches in straight sets, led by singles players Matt Miller, Andrew Ou and Andy Ye.

Baseball

Downingtown East 3, Coatesville 1 >> In this Monday game, Cougar pitchers Dylan Hansen and Michael Devenney held the Red Raiders to only three hits in seven innings and struck out 10 batters. The Downingtown East attack was led by Ryan Kuzmick (2-for-3, two doubles) and Conor Kelly (2-for-3, two RBIs, double).

Softball

Downingtown East 14, Coatesville 0 >> In this Monday contest, the Cougars got home runs from Sam Wendig, Lily Waterer, Julia Murray and Lucia Giuliano. Rachel Schumann struck out 18 in the complete game shutout and helped her own cause with three hits at the plate. Taylor Sherry had two hits for Coatesville.

College Softball

Golden Rams sweep doubleheader >> West Chester University (29-18 overall, 17-11 PSAC) earned a sweep against Shippensburg (30-14, 17-11) Tuesday, winning the opener 4-3 and the second game 8-2. West Chester’s Madison Melvin broke the school’s career hits record (previously held by Bri Garber) in the first game. The Golden Rams trailed 3-2 in the seventh inning of the first game, but Paige Marabell worked a bases-loaded walk to tie the score, then Casey Best lined a single up the middle to win the contest. In the second game, Grace Aguilar hit a two-run home run for the Golden Rams.

Mighty Macs earn split >> Immaculata University split its doubleheader with Widener Tuesday, winning the first game, 8-6, while dropping game two, 13-2. In the first game, the Macs scored four runs in the fourth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit. Peyton McGowan hit a double to score Rylee Martin, and Carlee Karcher cracked a double to tie the score at 3-3. Bryele Anthony gave the Macs their first lead with an RBI single to plate Karcher. Emma Pinto then scored Naila Valdez to extend the Immaculata lead to 5-3. In the fifth inning, McGowan again hit a double to score Martin. Karcher followed that up with a two-run blast to left center field to extend the Immaculata lead to 8-3.

College Baseball

Rowan 9, Immaculata 5 >> Rowan jumped out to an early 6-0 lead en route to its victory Tuesday. Joey Sacco, Joey Wright, Shawn Haut, Nick Turnage, Ryan Struble, Louis Sharp and Sal Serici each had one hit for the Mighty Macs.
