Is the AI Hype Train Derailing? Zuck's Comments Signal a ShiftMark Zuckerberg's recent pronouncements on AI have sent a ripple through the tech world and maybe the US stock market. Is this a sobering reality check from a well connected CEO, or a calculated move to protect Meta's established position?Key TakeawaysThe Energy Excuse: Zuck cites energy constraints as a major roadblock for massive AI scaling. Is this genuine concern, or a convenient way to justify slowing down in a fierce race?Open-Source Reversal? The potential end of Meta's open-source strategy hints at a fear of losing its competitive edge if the 'secret sauce' becomes the AI model itself. The NVIDIA Exit: The move to custom silicon is logical but high risk but does it also mask an unwillingness to invest in the bleeding edge of AI hardware necessary for major leaps? The Deeper QuestionsPlaying It Safe or Playing Defense? Could Zuck's pessimism be a calculated play to lower expectations and buy time for Meta to shore up its core business? Is AGI a Threat, Not a Goal? If a truly disruptive AGI emerges, it could upend Meta's reliance on network effects and centralized control. Is he downplaying AGI to protect the status quo?Wall Street vs. Disruptive Innovation: Zuck answers to investors and his own net worth. Does his focus on incremental gains reflect the short-term demands of the market rather than transformative possibilities? The GPT-5 TestThe launch of GPT-5 will be critical. If it vastly surpasses its predecessor will it force Zuck to eat his words or will it confirm that Meta is comfortable operating in a world of smaller, more managed AI improvements? The Real StakesZuckerberg's words highlight the tension between preserving established business models and embracing potentially disruptive AI advances. Is Meta willing to risk its current dominance on the promise of an uncertain future? What do you think? Is Zuck's pragmatism warranted or is Meta at risk of missing the next big wave of innovation?#AI #AGI #Meta #Zuckerberg #Innovation #Disruption

Take some time to go through this podcast where Mark Zuckerberg discussed the latest developments in Meta's #AI models, including the release of Llama-3 which will power the new Meta AI assistant. Llama-3 comes in 8 billion, 70 billion, and 405 billion parameter versions (trained with 15 trillion tokens on a custom-built 24k GPU cluster; with Llam3-8B doing better than Llama2-70B in some cases), with the 70 billion model already achieving strong performance on benchmarks like MMLU. But also some comments on going to smaller LLMs: "I think 8B isn’t quite small enough for a bunch of use cases. Over time I'd love to get a 1-2B parameter model, or even a 500M parameter model and see what you can do with that".Zuckerberg explained that Meta has been investing heavily in AI capabilities for years, initially to improve products like Reels, but now with the goal of building towards artificial general intelligence (#AGI). He discussed how the team has had to expand the capabilities of their models over time, like adding better tool use and coding abilities.Regarding the open-sourcing and potential misuse of these powerful AI models, Zuckerberg acknowledged the challenges and said Meta is trying to keep their options open and consider all the potential risks and benefits. He emphasized the importance of understanding the taxonomy of harms that can arise from these systems. He also touched on his interest in history, particularly American and classical history, and how the metaverse could be used for historical exploration, though he sees more immediate use cases beyond just time travel experiences.Philippe Cordier Etienne Grass Pierre Demeulemeester Eric Grumblatt Alex Marandonhttps://lnkd.in/eT9mACej

In a bold move, Square Enix's president, Takashi Kiryu, announced the company's aggressive strategy to integrate AI into its gaming development and marketing efforts. Highlighting this commitment, Kiryu stated, “We also intend to be aggressive in applying AI and other cutting-edge technologies to both our content development and our publishing functions.”Square Enix plans to leverage AI for productivity gains and marketing advancements, with precedent in the company's previous work, like the AI-driven facial animation in "Final Fantasy 7 Remake."While Square Enix's commitment to AI in gaming is not surprising, the strength of the messaging certainly was, perhaps one more small indicator of the industry's larger direction. It should be clear to everybody, if it wasn't already, that many companies are not touching the brakes on AI adoption, even as the practical implications and necessary caution in such a transformative journey remain to be fully understood and navigated.
