To account for Renter potentially incurring additional amounts owed under the rental contract, at the time of rental, renters without a ticketed return travel itinerary will be required to provide a deposit between $300 and $850 depending on the rental location and class of vehicle rented.

The Hertz credit card authorization amount can vary, but if you're booking with a credit card, we will place an authorization amount of up to $200, and $500 for debit cards (plus any projected charges) onto your card.

Credit and Debit Card Rules

Generally, at the time of a U.S. corporate-operated location rental, we'll require a credit card hold of total estimated rental charges plus 25% or $200, whichever is greater.

Customers looking for availability, selection, cheaper rates, and a better overall experience typically find that on an Enterprise lot. However, Hertz comes in close second with the lowest rates for drivers under 25 and plenty of luxury models in its fleet.

Paying with a credit card is generally the best option when renting a car, and some companies require one on file at pick-up time. Using a credit card can protect you as a renter since the company doesn't have direct access to your bank account.

Can You Use Someone Else's Credit Card? No, you must use a credit card that's registered to the main driver to rent a car. This is due to the legal responsibility the driver has after signing the rental agreement on pick-up.

Enterprise accepts debit cards for customers renting a car at one of their airport locations. To pay, you need your debit card (Visa, Mastercard, and Discover) and proof of an outgoing flight at the Enterprise location where you plan to drop off the car.

Regardless of payment method a valid credit card with sufficient credit is required to secure the rental at time of pickup. We typically reserve an amount on your credit card (or take a deposit) at least equal to the estimated charges plus a security bond (amount is shown on your Rental Agreement).

In most cases, the location will perform a credit check for debit card customers to determine credit worthiness at the time of rental. The customer must meet the minimum criteria to rent using a debit card.

While credit cards typically provide some insurance coverage for a rental car, debit cards do not. That means you may have to show that you have sufficient coverage or purchase more from the rental company. Undergo a credit check.
